Maybe i am a crazy person or am an optimist beyond reason, but i believe that one day we will have HIV free generation. The definition of a generation, according to conventional wisdom is approximately 30 yrs.Thirty years from now, most of us will still be alive(assuming those who read this blog are not beyond fifty) and we can witness the era where HIV will be like cow pox-history! This is most likely going to be a pipe dream, unless and until we ,subsaharan Africans and the entire world embrace mass testing and treatment ,condomising sex, effective mother to child transmission strategies, prevention in positives, reduced stigma and demystification of Testing and treatment available.
These and my undying hope that we will get a vaccine, develop more effective drugs with less side effects and that are more torelable to most of the patients.
Kenya can have a HIV free generation ,those children who will be conceived today and coming days should be protected from infection..the only to do this is by getting tested before conceiving, before having sex people should know their status.
Without denying others their right to procreate,it is my considered opinion that people living with HIV (and know it) should try not to get children, and if they must, to have good prenatal clinic attendance ,consultation with the right proffessionals to have in place effective interventions.
As martin Luther dreamt, so i am dreaming of a time when we shall only talk of HIV as story and a social and medical success story. join me.
